The Fourth of July is this weekend. And some celebrations will likely take a different tone this year, and that’s not just because your favorite fireworks show is cancelled.

Many Americans, particularly white Americans are thinking differently about what it means to be patriotic amid the racial injustices in our country. But these contradictions are not new.

Quintard Taylor is a history professor emeritus at the University of Washington and the founder of BlackPast.org, and he talks about the long history of celebrating the holiday's freedoms, while the very freedoms being celebrated are not extended to all citizens.
