Alaska Air Group announced yesterday its proposal to buy Hawaiian Airlines for nearly $2 billion. Jon Ostrower, editor-in-chief at The Air Current, told KUOW's Kim Malcolm that when Alaska looked at growth strategies, Hawaiian was the answer. The deal could close in 2025 but will face federal approval hurdles.

Alaska CEO Ben Minicucci says buying Hawaiian will help it compete against the four biggest U.S. airlines. Alaska is the fifth largest carrier in North America, based on passenger volume.
