KUOW's book club will read "The Boys in the Boat" by Daniel James Brown this month.

Brown's New York Times–bestselling book is synonymous with Washington state today, thanks in no small part to the 2023 film adaptation. But long before George Clooney sought to put his mark on it, the story of the University of Washington’s crew team in Nazi Germany captivated readers. Their quest for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics continues to be inspiring.

I realize many of you have likely read this selection before, but I thought the current Paris Olympics would give us an opportunity revisit this story with fresh eyes. And for those of you who, like me, are reading it for the first time, I hope today's games will give this pick an extra edge of excitement!

Here's the reading schedule:

  • Read the first 10 chapters by August 19.
  • Finish the book by September 2.

As per usual, I’ll send out a newsletter with my analysis on each of the above dates. And I’m very pleased to share that Brown has already agreed to an author interview to finish our reading. Look out for more details in the first check-in.

Subscribe to the book club newsletter here, and join the conversation by emailing me directly at kcampbell@kuow.org.

Before you go: Thank you to everyone who voted on our September book pick last month. We've closed the survey and have our winner. But you'll have to wait for the results just a bit longer. Hint: It's a fantastic book! But you already knew that.
