Seattle celebrates Biden's inauguration
People in the greater Seattle area overwhelmingly voted for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, so it’s no surprise there were impromptu celebrations all over the region today.
In Ballard, the bell tower rang "joyously."
In the middle of old downtown Ballard, there’s a bell tower. Jay Craig is the bell keeper.
“I’m the only one who’s got the key to it, and I’m the only one knows how to ring it — so that makes me the Bellkeeper.”
Today, he opened up the control panel and let passers by push the button.
“I’m ringing this for our future,” said Laura K. Cooper as she pushed the button.
Craig said the bell has two different rings. There’s a joyful ring — he played that when the Seahawks won the Superbowl in 2014.
And then there’s a slower, mournful tolling.
“You can really tell the difference," he said. "I only did the tolling — the mournful — once. And that was exactly four years ago, when Trump got inaugurated," Craig said.
"Now, it’s all day; it’s just joyful pealing, joyful ringing of the bell. And I’ll be here as long as somebody wants to ring it.”
