Michael-Shawn Dugar on the NFL combine
At this week’s NFL combine, just like every year, teams watch teenage football players in clinging garments run and jump. They have their wingspans measured. Their hand size measured. And it’s all televised. And is anyone else uncomfortable? The Athletic’s Seahawks reporter Michael-Shawn Dugar says it’s just as creepy as it sounds.
WA plastic bag ban
In 2016, California became the first state to ban single use plastic bags. Pending the results of a bill moving through the state legislature, Washington might become the second. But the issue of plastic bags isn’t as open and shut as you might think. Kevin Kelly is general manager of the recycling facility Recology Cleanscapes. Heidi Roop is the lead scientist for science communication at the University of Washington’s Climate Impacts Group.
Leigh Calvez, The Breath of a Whale
Last summer much of the state, the country, and even the world was transfixed by the image of a mother orca carrying her dead calf on her forehead for weeks in mourning. Leigh Calvez spent decades as a scientist, naturalist, and nature writer. Her new book is called The Breath of a Whale.
The promise of a cure for HIV/AIDS
35 million people have died of AIDS since the epidemic began more than 30 years ago. In 2007, a major treatment breakthrough: a Seattle man, living in Berlin, was cured. But that success hasn’t been replicated – until now. A second patient, this time in London, appears to have been cured of HIV/AIDS. Dr. Rowena Johnston directs research at the AIDS research foundation AmFAR; she’s in Seattle for a conference and shared why this is such a huge deal.
