Durkan on homelessness
A new poll says that a majority of people in King County say there is a moral obligation to solve homelessness. But they also have low confidence that their elected officials can pull it off. We asked Mayor Durkan how she plans to prove those concerns wrong.
U.S. Attorney Brian Moran
President Trump nominated prosecutor Brian Moran to be U.S. Attorney for western Washington; he was confirmed in January. In conversation with Bill Radke and KUOW law enforcement reporter Amy Radil, he explains his role in current pending cases and whether he’ll be independent from the president who appointed him.
Tacoma sues Purdue Pharma
The city of Tacoma is suing OxyContin maker Purdue Pharmaceutical over its role in the opioid epidemic. It’s one of more than 1,600 individuals and jurisdictions to do so. Chris McGreal at The Guardian is author of the book American Overdose; Elizabeth Pauli is Tacoma City Manager.
Booked and Buried
In 2018, 39 people were shot and killed by police in Washington and Oregon. But it might surprise you to hear that the same number of people died in WA and Oregon jails. 70% of them had not been convicted of a crime. “Booked and Buried” is a new collaboration among KUOW, OPB, and the Northwest News Network. KUOW’s Austin Jenkins and Sydney Brownstone have been working on the initiative.
