Don't be alarmed, these Seattle firefighters just want to see people

While you’re social distancing at home Friday evening in Seattle, you might see flashing lights from a passing firetruck.

But don’t be alarmed — it may be part of a police and fire department event called Friday Night Lights.

It’s hard to be a firefighter in the midst of the pandemic — you can’t socially distance while fighting fires or helping people after a car crash.

Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins says some firefighters have adapted, while others have struggled with the emotional burden.

“It’s difficult going home each day, not knowing what you’re bringing with you,” he said.

Scoggins said it helps to connect with people in a more "normal" way. So from 6:30 to 7:30 on Friday evening — and every Friday for awhile —Seattle firefighters will drive their engines and ladder trucks all over residential Seattle streets, hoping to catch a wave from you on your porch, or through a window.

You can find a map of where they're going, and when, here.
