Summer 2021 Online intro to Radio Journalism Workshop

Applications for the summer 2021 workshop are now closed.

If you join our mailing list, you'll be reminded about upcoming application deadlines.

In RadioActive Youth Media's fun, challenging, and hands-on virtual workshop, teens learn radio journalism and storytelling skills, build confidence, and work with others while creating a true radio story about one person. The 2021 workshop will be held online on Zoom, and will run from Monday, July 12 through Friday, August 6, 2021.

This is a PAID opportunity open to teens ages 15-18 in the greater Seattle area (King, Pierce, Snohomish, and Kitsap counties). Youth earn $600 for completing the workshop.

No previous journalism experience is necessary. In fact, we prioritize youth who are not already part of other arts and media programs. If you've never done something like this before, we encourage you to apply.

  • Participants are selected based on the strength of their applications. We receive many more applications than we can accept, so show us your best self!
  • The most important part of the application is the Story Idea. Click here for an example Story Idea. Your Story Idea should be a true story about one person you know who you can talk to this summer.
  • Don't worry about having good grammar or spelling in your application. You don't have to write formally. We just want to get to know the real you, and what you care about.
  • If you prefer to fill out a PDF version of the application, scroll down to the bottom of this page.
  • All you need to submit is the application itself! Please do not submit additional materials (like a cover letter or a letter of recommendation) along with your application.

  • You are 15-18 years old (you must be 15 years old by July 12, 2021 to be eligible due to University of Washington employment rules).
  • You live in the greater Seattle metropolitan area (King, Pierce, Snohomish or Kitsap county).
  • You're excited to use media to tell true stories. You're engaged in the world. You're curious and always asking questions. You love writing and want to try telling stories through sound.
  • You want to share all sides of the story as a journalist — this workshop is NOT a platform to promote a cause, organization, or point of view.
  • You're ready to try new things: No broadcasting or journalism experience required! In fact, we prioritize youth who do not already have access to robust arts and media programs.

  • In this workshop, you will work with a mentor to produce a true audio story about one person in your home or community. The story you produce will be posted on and included in the RadioActive podcast. Some stories may air on 94.9.
  • DATES: Monday, July 12 through Friday, August 6, 2021.
  • There will be a mandatory orientation on Wednesday, July 7 in the evening and a virtual Listening Party on Saturday, August 14.

Note: You will need to put in additional time outside of workshop hours to complete projects.

  • LOCATION: Online, on Zoom.
  • All equipment needed is provided for the duration of the program, including a laptop, audio recorder, smartphone, and/or internet hot-spot if needed. Oh, and a TON of snacks.
  • For successfully completing the workshop, you'll earn $600.

  • Attend all workshop meetings.
  • Complete work on time (you will work outside of workshop hours).
  • Work on your own and in small groups.
  • Have fun, be creative, take risks!

  • Improve your communications skills: writing, listening, and talking to people. Build your confidence and leadership skills.
  • Work with professional journalists. Develop time management skills and meet deadlines in a professional setting. Learn how to give and receive feedback in a collaborative and creative environment.
  • Be part of a supportive, collaborative, fun group of teens. Gain mentors to support your career and education path.
  • By finishing this workshop, you earn the opportunity to keep making radio at KUOW as an advanced producer.
  • For successfully completing the workshop, you'll earn $600.

  • Do I need to have my own computer and internet connection to do this workshop?

We'll provide a laptop and audio recorder for each participant, and a phone and wifi hot-spot if you need one. We'll disinfect the equipment in advance and arrange to deliver it to you in a safe way.

  • Will we still have mentors in an online workshop?

We'll still have skilled journalism mentors working one-on-one with each participant.

  • Will there still be a listening party at the end of the online workshop?

We'll be sharing the stories via an online event that will be shaped by participant feedback.

  • Will I still be able to participate in RadioActive Advanced Producer programming if I do the online workshop?

Yes! Anyone who completes the online workshop will be a part of our graduate community. We won't be able to cover the same exact stuff in this workshop as in our regular summer program, so we'll find a way to offer opportunities for additional skill-building to graduates of this workshop if they want to join certain Advanced Producer programs.

  • Since the workshop is online, can I apply if I live outside of the Seattle area?

Unfortunately, no. This workshop is only open to teens ages 15-18 who live in the greater Seattle metropolitan area (King, Snohomish, Pierce, and Kitsap counties). This is because teens in this workshop will be eligible for future in-person programming, which takes place in Seattle's University District.

  • Will there be chances to meet in person if it is safe to do so by then?

Safety of participants and staff is our top priority. If given the green light to do so by CDC guidance and KUOW leadership, we will offer the opportunity to have Thursday mentor group meetings at the KUOW radio station in Seattle's University District. Either way, we will offer optional online social meetups with KUOW staff throughout the workshop.

  • Is the in-person Intro to Radio Journalism Workshop canceled forever?

Definitely not! We're hoping to bring back our regular summer workshop next year. We're putting a pause on it for now so that we can come back strong as soon as possible.
