The Wing Luke Museum is under new leadership following the resignation of its previous Executive Director, Joël Barraquiel Tan. Barraquiel Tan's departure follows a staff walkout in May, in protest of language regarding the Israel-Palestine in one of its exhibits.

Kamahanahokulani Farrar Law has been named as the museum's interim executive director as it searches for a permanent replacement.

In a recent press release, the Museum highlighted Barraquiel Tan’s efforts to expand outreach and community engagement. Steve McLean, senior director of strategic communications, remarked, “Joël and the Board of Trustees reached a mutual agreement to part ways. We naturally wish Joël the very best in his future endeavors and the challenges that he'll be taking on.”

Barraquiel Tan's exit is the latest departure from the nonprofit, after former Deputy Executive Director Cassie Chinn left in July.

Barraquiel Tan, who became Executive Director in 2022 amid the pandemic and rising anti-Asian hate, reflected positively on his tenure in an interview with KUOW. He noted that he is particularly proud of the “Arts as Apothecary” initiative, designed to improve mental and physical health through arts and culture for Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.

Looking forward, Barraquiel Tan shared his thoughts on stepping down: “This is one of the boldest personal moves I’ve made, stepping out to be open because I want to make a change.” He expressed excitement about new opportunities aligned with his passion for arts and culture, and emphasized the importance of supporting cultural institutions during challenging times.
