Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon At The Neptune (Warning: It’s Awkward)
Seattleites turned out in force recently to hear from and ask questions of alt-rock deity Kim Gordon. Gordon is a musician, artist, record producer and one of the founders of the band Sonic Youth.
Inspired by post-punk, avant-garde and no wave bands of the 1970s, Sonic Youth created an unconventional sound marked by dissonance, feedback and alternate tunings that helped change how rock was defined.
Gordon’s autobiography, “Girl In A Band,” came out last month. In it she relates her upbringing in California, her life in the art world, the music scene that led to the creation of Sonic Youth, how Black Flag’s Henry Rollins created twerking and the ups and downs of her marriage. Gordon and her ex-husband Thurston Moore formed Sonic Youth in 1981. The group released 16 albums before breaking up in 2011.
Gordon spoke at Seattle’s Neptune Theatre in conversation with Sub Pop Records founder Bruce Pavitt.
