The race to replace a 'Congressman for life'

As Representative Jim McDermott prepares to retire after 28 years of service, the top three contenders for his 7

th

District seat in Congress are on the stump to succeed him.

Washington State Senator Pramila Jayapal, King County Council Member Joe McDermott and Washington State Representative Brady Walkinshaw are all Democrats. They faced off last night in a public debate. Topics included their views on federal terrorism and gun legislation; immigration, voting and climate regulations; and which Republican they’d want to have a beer with.

The two candidates who receive the most votes in the upcoming Aug. 2 primary election will face off again in the Nov. 8 general election.

This event took place at Seattle Public Library’s Central Library on July 14. It was presented by the Seattle CityClub, the Downtown Seattle Association and Seattle Public Library. The moderators were C.R. Douglas of Q13 FOX News and Essex Porter of KIRO 7 News.
