Partisan bickering, meet fellowship and belonging, the Eric Liu way

Sometimes it seems our partisan divide is as wide as the Grand Canyon. Is that just the new normal, or can something be done to bring Americans together?

Activist and author Eric Liu has been looking for answers in a kind of civic religion. His faith in democracy drives him to preach sermons on what it takes to make our chosen form of government vibrant. Liu’s new book is "Become America: Civic Sermons on Love, Responsibility, and Democracy." It’s a collection of talks he’s given during Civic Saturday events in Seattle and around the country. About the work author Claudia Rankine says:

“With great generosity and hope, Become America calls forward our history to point to our expansive potential as civic beings. This is a work of tremendous grace, love, and reach as it crosses boundaries to illuminate our shared humanity.”

Eric Liu is the author of several books and the co-founder and CEO of Citizen University. He served as a White House speechwriter for President Bill Clinton and later as the President’s deputy domestic policy adviser.

Town Hall Seattle presented Eric Liu as part of their Civics Series. He spoke at Washington Hall on May 7. KUOW’s Sonya Harris recorded the event.
