The educator and civil rights leader Mary McLeod Bethune died in 1955. Had there been a Mount Rushmore of Black achievement, mourners said at the time, she would have been on it.

Bethune’s groundbreaking life is the subject of a new book, “A Passionate Mind in Relentless Pursuit: The Vision of Mary McLeod Bethune.” The book’s author and chair of Africana studies at Brown University Noliwe Rooks talks with host David Folkenflik.
