In Alaska, communities celebrate first catch of the season with throwing parties

Traditionally, throughout many Indigenous coastal communities in Western Alaska, when someone catches their first seal of the season, their family holds a “throwing party” to distribute that fresh catch to women and elders.

Today, the tradition has expanded to celebrate all kinds of firsts, like graduations, and includes candy and little trinkets.
