This Seattle teen spent lunchtime in the bathroom. 'It felt safer than sitting alone in the cafeteria'
At 16, Azure Savage took a journalism class at Garfield High School in Seattle. Savage liked it, discovering a talent for interviewing.
As a queer, trans, person of color, Savage had painful experiences navigating our education system. Savage decided to interview other students about their experiences leading to a book: “You Failed Us: Students of Color Talk Seattle Schools”-- about the issues they were dealing with.
Azure Savage read from “You Failed Us” at The Elliott Bay Book Company on November 14 and was then interviewed by journalist Marcus Harrison Green, the co-founder of the South Seattle Emerald.
KUOW’s Sonya Harris recorded the event.
