We're reaching the end of another dark, rainy winter week here in the Pacific Northwest. A good time to take a break. As we do most Fridays, we got some recommendations for interesting things to do, both in-person and virtually.

Today, KUOW’s Kim Malcolm spoke to Hannah Myrick, local director of the daily newsletter The Evergrey, which always has a wealth of arts and culture events to recommend.

Saturday Secret Matinees at The Grand Illusion

The Grand Illusion is the oldest continuously running movie theater in Seattle. This weekend, they are showing a film called The Daredevils of the Red Circle, from 1939. It's a story of three circus acrobats that are working to stop a prisoner who has escaped.

But this is part of a 12-part film series, running through March 26. They'll be showing a feature film every Saturday, but you don't know what the feature film will be. Consider attending each Saturday for a surprise.

And the Grand Illusion is taking their Covid protocols pretty seriously.

The Bushwick Book Club presents Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

If any of you listen to the band Japanese Breakfast, Michelle Zauner is the lead vocalist and songwriter for that band. Crying in H Mart is the story of her journey through grief after her mother is diagnosed with terminal cancer. It covers her growing up as an Asian American in Eugene, Oregon, her and her mom bonding over food, finding work in the restaurant industry, all these things that make up that grief journey.

Bushwick Book Club picks a book, and local musicians and artists compose related music. I think it's really cool because you have the kind of nerdy book club vibe of people who have read the same book as you, but you get to see people's interpretations of that novel in a whole different form.
