A quarter of patients deemed unresponsive show signs of consciousness, study finds

People with severe brain damage may lie unresponsive in a hospital bed for years. But new research has found that up to a quarter of those people show signs of brain activity that suggest they are aware of the world around them.

We discuss the findings with neurologist Nicholas Schiff, the study’s senior author.
