West Seattle’s ballots from the November election will be recounted, the King County Elections department said on Tuesday.

That's because the race between candidates Lisa Herbold and Shannon Braddock is too close to call. Herbold led Braddock by 36 votes for the District 1 position.

State law mandates a manual recount of a local race when there are fewer than 150 votes between the candidates.

Herbold has been an aide to Councilmember Nick Licata since the late 1990s. She’s a native New Yorker who moved to Seattle to open an office for ACORN, the now-defunct progressive advocacy group. She has a grown daughter and grandkids.

Braddock, too, is a mom and a legislative aide. She works for Joe McDermott on the King County Council.

King County will certify the November election on Tuesday.

Correction, 11:45 a.m., 11/24/2015: A previous version of this story misstated the leader in the District 1 race. Lisa Herbold is ahead by 36 votes.
