Three Dollar Bill celebrates queer film, local burlesque, and hot gay rugby
The 27th annual Seattle Queer Film Festival starts today and runs through Oct. 23. It includes 150 films from around the world, which can be seen in person or virtually.
KUOW’s Kim Malcolm reached out for some highlights from Three Dollar Bill Cinema Managing Director Billy Ray Brewton, and SQFF Director Kathleen Mullen.
This is an amazing story of the first annual burlesque festival in Seattle. It stars Mx. Pucks A'Plenty, who tells their story, along with all the other people within the film, who are all BIPOC. It tells about their struggles, their joys, how they became burlesque dancers, and why performing is so important to them.
This is about a woman who somehow ends up leading a hipster millennial cult. Created by and starring Scout Durwood, it's just wild and funny. It takes a lot of potshots at millennial culture and the way we sort of "cultisize" all of these movements that are happening within our culture.
There are a lot of ways to describe it, but I find the way that appeals to our audience the most is by calling it "the hot gay rugby movie." It’s a UK film about a bunch of very attractive, generally shirtless rugby players, and the romances and the drama therein. It's actually a really well-made film with a great story. I think our gay audiences are going to flip for it, shirtless or not.
This is a film about food, family, and romance. It's really a coming-of-age drama about a young man finding his way and his sexuality, centering around his family's restaurant called Golden Delicious, as well as his high school, and the basketball team.
