19-year-old student dies after slipping on University of Washington campus

A 19-year old sophomore died Wednesday morning after she slipped and fell on University of Washington campus.

The college sophomore was near the Drumheller Fountain and Electrical Engineering building when she fell and hit her head.

She was taken to Harborview Medical Center. She died soon after arriving.

The cause of the fall hasn’t been confirmed, but the university has issued several safety warnings given the cold weather snap. The university was closed on Monday and Tuesday due to inclement weather.

UW police did not immediately release the college sophomore’s name, but UW President Ana Mari Cauce said via Twitter that she had been in touch with the woman's family.

UW police said detectives hadn't determined if snow or ice is to blame.

An online map that the university says is constantly updated shows snow removal efforts had concluded on some of the sidewalks in the area.

But a walk through campus revealed that patches of solid ice remain around the university's HUB building, the heart of campus, and the student center.

Cauce tweeted that "Student safety is our number one priority," but people responded with complaints about the condition of walkways on campus.
