Dan Newhouse has won re-election in Washington’s 4th Congressional District, making him one of the last survivors of President Trump’s campaign against Republicans who voted to impeach him in the U.S. House.

Of those House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, four retired and another four lost to Trump-backed candidates in their primaries. Just two advanced to the general election: Newhouse and Congressman David Valadao of California. On Tuesday night, Valadao was also leading in his re-election bid.

On the issues, Newhouse is a conservative’s conservative, with a 100% rating from the National Right to Life Committee. But his vote to impeach President Trump angered the MAGA base and provoked several Republican challengers loyal to Trump to jump into the race. Democrat Doug White emerged from the August primary as his challenger in the general election.

For his part, White ran an ambitious campaign that focused on his personal story as a businessman and fourth-generation Washingtonian, and on energizing underrepresented voters, including Latinos, who make up a higher percentage of this district than any other in the state.

His campaign also hoped that MAGA voters would stay home rather than turn out for Newhouse.

But in the end, it wasn’t enough in a district that votes more Republican than any other in Washington state. A Democrat hasn't won the 4th since Jay Inslee back in the mid-1990s.
