Inside the Mariners' locker room: 'It's just so, so wet'
Lookout Landing's Kate Preusser joins Soundside to share her experience in the locker room after the Mariners beat the A's to secure their spot in the playoffs for the first time in 21 years.
You couldn't have scripted it any better: Bottom of the ninth, two outs, full count, and a walk-off home run from Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh to beat the Oakland Athletics 2-1, clinching a wild card spot in the MLB Playoffs.
Their first in 21 years.
The M's 21-year playoff drought was the longest in American major league sports history, and Lookout Landing's editor in chief, Kate Preusser, was there in the locker room for the post-game celebration.
"What struck me when I came down was just like, it's so quiet," Preusser shared. "And then they pull back the sheeting and we walked into just maybe one of the most chaotic scenes I've ever been in in my life."
Preusser sat down with Soundside host Libby Denkmann to talk about what makes the Mariners special this season, including breakout star Julio Rodríguez, Eugenio Suárez, and a pitching lineup that has put in a lot of work this season.
You can listen to the entire conversation above.
Soundside also caught up with 9-year-old super-fan Edmund Bollay and got his reaction to Friday's game.
"I feel super excited," Bollay explained. "Super proud of them, super happy that I got to experience that moment."
The Mariners have three games left in their regular season, and will face either the Toronto Blue Jays or the Cleveland Guardians in the first round of the playoffs, starting Friday.
