Dare to Speak. Discourse amid difference
As of the writing of this introduction, we do not yet know who the next President of the United States will be. We do know that the country is deeply divided along partisan lines. We also face disagreements over the boundaries of free speech in a rapidly changing, digitally-charged world.
In this conversation, author Suzanne Nossel says we must do more to create a reasonable discourse between the differing sides. Nossel is the author of Dare to Speak: Defending Free Speech for All. The work offers suggestions for how we can have both an inclusive society and free speech protections.
Suzanne Nossel is the CEO of the nonprofit PEN America, an organization that defends and celebrates free expression. Author and journalist Dinaw Mengestu interviewed her.
This Town Hall Seattle livestream event took place on August 25. Town Hall Board of Directors Vice President Anita Mires introduced the speakers.
