Surprise, Seattle! City Council Members Are Up For Election, Too

The crowded Seattle mayor's race is sucking up a lot of attention, so you may be surprised to know there are contested City Council races on your primary ballot as well.

Four incumbent City Council members are up for re-election: Nick Licata, Sally Bagshaw, Mike O'Brien and Richard Conlin.

Licata and Bagshaw have one challenger each. In Washington state's primary system, the top two vote-getters move on to the general election, so both incumbents and their challengers will advance.

But two council races have drawn three candidates each. In Position 8, small business owner Albert Shen and street performer David Ishii are challenging freshman Councilmember Mike O'Brien.

In Position 2, veteran Councilmember Richard Conlin faces Socialist Alternative Party candidate Kshama Sawant and Amazon manager Brian Carver.
