Known for opening doors for Seattle artists, she now is opening the door to her family’s legacy

Mayumi Tsutakawa is the only daughter of an influential arts family in Seattle. Her father was a sculptor, her mother and brothers musicians. During her career as an arts administrator, Tsutakawa focused on advocating for artists and communities of color.

Now she has turned her attentions to chronicling and preserving her family and cultural legacy.

“It’s really important for those of us in the history field to figure out ways to make our history alive,” she says. “Our history is what made us today.”
