How you can help protect public media funding

We’ve heard from many in our community who are expressing growing concern about legislation to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. CPB was created by Congress in the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 and is the largest single source of funding for public radio, television and related services.

For KUOW, CPB support accounts for anywhere from 5.4 to 5.9 percent of our total annual revenue during the last three fiscal years. KUOW’s CPB support is used to pay a portion of the programming fees to carry NPR shows such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

But in the wider lens of public media, CPB helps to subsidize millions in technology that is used to distribute programming via satellite, the loss of which would be destabilizing across the entire public media landscape.

So what can you do?
