KUOW is seeking an experienced reporter to focus on stories about race and identity in the Pacific Northwest, taking a deep look at social movements, structural inequities, cultural representation and other priority issues within BIPOC communities. The reporter will bring a local lens to social issues that drive national conversation, including: immigration, voting rights, tribal recognition, the effects of racial violence and discrimination, and economic disparity, among others.
Successful candidates will have strong insight about how race plays into the news of the day, as well as a drive to write about hot-button issues with authority and thoughtful perspective. Through this beat, the reporter will explore shifting racial, ethnic and cultural demographics to find emerging trends about people who live and work in the Puget Sound region.
We are looking for a journalist who will build deep and varied sources that lead to scoops and enterprise features, and who can turn around a story with speed and clarity when news breaks.
The Race and Identity Reporter (Reporter 1) will play a key role with the KUOW newsroom to help advance how we approach stories about race and identity. We want a reporter who will be open to collaboration with other reporters, to dive deep into stories at the intersection of race and politics, education, healthcare, and other beats. While race is a primary focus of this beat, we consider it the responsibility of every KUOW journalist to explore story angles that involve race and ethnicity.

KUOW has an outstanding opportunity for a Reporter to identify and craft original stories across digital and broadcast platforms. This position will file feature-length stories and news spots for an assigned news beat, while cultivating sources and engaging audiences via social media and community engagement.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
-Identify and craft deeply reported audio and digital stories.
-Contribute news reports to daily newscasts and drivetimes.
-Appear on KUOW talk shows and at live events to present and discuss reporting.
-Actively engage with social media and source networks as a reporting and distribution tool.
-Meet daily filing schedule that may require occasional evening and weekend work.
-Work closely with editors and content producers in creating plans that articulate a vision and strategy for coverage of a beat.
-Perform other duties as assigned.
Position reports to Assignment Editor.
• Bachelor’s degree and three years of professional broadcast journalism experience including specific position requirements relating to news writing, radio production and audio editing.
• Impeccable journalistic integrity and editorial judgment.
• Ability to manage several projects concurrently.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to professionally represent the station.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
