Students chosen for the Weekday High Intern Program spend part of their summer learning about radio reporting and broadcasting, with the goal of producing their own radio stories. Weekday Host Steve Scher, Managing Editor Nathan Friend, and Assistant Managing Editor Brad Iverson-Long work closely with the interns, helping them learn and master the tools of radio journalism. Workshops led by many of KUOW's news and programming staff also help prepare the students for a further exploration into the world of reporting and producing.
Our final show looks at one group that'll last for just months, and another that's lasted centuries. Kayla Sargent talks to international young adults currently in the Northwest learning about environmental restoration. Emily Barecca talks to youth in the Suquamish Tribe.
"Through this internship I learned what a
journalist really does. I learned how to
write, how to interview someone, how to edit. I want to
be a journalist now because of this experience."
