Marijuana: The Path To Legalization In Washington State

Washington became one of the first states to legalize marijuana for recreational use in 2012. But there are a lot of challenges ahead: the state must set up a licensing system for marijuana growers and sellers, the federal government may mount a challenge, the need to set a new limit on amount of marijuana in the bloodstream for safe driving. And medical marijuana is still in the picture.

Over the next several months we will be exploring the issue and tracking the impact of I-502.

This article was supposed to be called, “How Not To Look Like A Poser When You Buy Weed.”

But when I called budtenders in Colorado for advice, they said that when it comes to legal pot, most everyone is a newbie. The only rule I heard was, “Don’t cuss at the budtender,” which seems less a rule than a tenet of basic human decency.

Legal marijuana sales are set to begin in Washington state as early as Tuesday after authorities began issuing retail licenses to stores.

The state's Liquor Control Board issued Monday the first 24 marijuana retailer licenses, the board said in a statement. The stores can now stock up on marijuana products and begin sales on Tuesday after the mandated 24-hour "quarantine" period.

Let The Carnival Commence: First Pot Shops Open Tuesday

James Lathrop owns Cannabis City in Sodo. He expects to be among the first in Washington state to open a licensed recreational marijuana shop.

This is Washington state’s final weekend without recreational pot stores. On Monday, the Evergreen State joins Colorado in issuing business licenses to qualifying retailers. It's expected about 20 licenses will be issued including one to a shop in Sodo called Cannabis City.
