The University of Washington welcomes top international diplomat Secretary–General of the United Nations Ban Ki–Moon today. The University has scheduled a special ceremony to honor Ban. The school will give Ban an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. The secretary–general will give a lecture as part of the program. He'll also meet with UW students for a discussion on the work of the UN and challenges around the world.
In 2007, Ban succeeded Kofi Anan to become the eighth secretary–general of the United Nations. Before that, Ban served as Korea's minister of foreign affairs and trade. As secretary–general, Ban has pushed the Sudanese government to allow peacekeeping troops in Darfur. He's also taken strong views on climate change and made it one of his top priorities.
The University previously gave out some tickets for today's event through a lottery. Otherwise, the ceremony is closed to the public. However, UWTV will show a live webcast of the event at 3:30 today on uwtv.org.
