Seattle Poet Populist Mike Hickey

Writer and teacher Mike Hickey is Seattle's "poet populist" for 2009. He talks with KUOW's literary producer Elizabeth Austen about how writing saved his life — and why he thinks it can save your life, too.

Mike Hickey teaches creative writing at South Seattle Community College and is the author of a poetry chapbook, "In Defense of Eve." He also volunteers teaching writing to children at summer bereavement camps, to at risk youth in White Center, and to prisoners at the Monroe Correctional Complex. He lives in West Seattle with his wife and son.
