Organic Success

Megan Sukys/Dave Beck
02/15/2007

Success grows out of passion, not necessarily expertise – or pesticides. Today, Myra Goodman tells us how, with no knowledge of farming, she turned 2.5 acres of raspberries into the world's largest producer of organic produce. We also learn about the life of Walt Disney.

At 2:07 p.m. - The Life and Legend of Walt Disney (archive from 11/16/06)
As the first writer to be given complete access to the Disney archives, Neal Gabler spent seven years meticulously researching his latest book, Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination. In an archive interview from November 16, 2006, Neal Gabler joins John Moe with the story of a man whose work left an ineradicable brand on our culture but whose life has largely been enshrouded in myth.

Success grows from passion, not expertise. Myra and Drew Goodman knew nothing about farming when they found a rural California house where they could work off rent by improving the property. Myra shares how that naïve beginning became Earthbound Farm in the new book, Food to Live By. Today, Myra tells Megan Sukys how 2.5 acres of raspberries launched the world's largest grower of organic produce.

  • At 2:45 p.m. - The Art of Mary Henry
Physicians and mathematicians, like tennis players, are said to peak early, doing their most brilliant and creative work in their twenties. Artists follow a different trajectory, with many careers carrying on well into the senior years. Whidbey Island painter Mary Henry is certainly a case in point. At 93 she is still going strong, with two separate exhibitions this month highlighting her rigorous abstractions, including one major work hot off the paintbrush. Our art critic Gary Faigin joins us to talk about this Northwest legend.

  • At 2:55 p.m. - Ali Marcus
Seattle-based singer-songwriter Ali Marcus plays us out today. She says her new album Miles and Miles and Miles is "an album of place. Maps, views, directions, roots and gazes, really. There's no sense of home in this one, nor is there a sense of travel, but instead a thorough confidence that the places we've been are also the ones we are in." We'll sample songs from Ali Marcus later this hour.
