Vietnam Vets Get 'Long Overdue' Welcome Home

Apr 1, 2016

Veterans and their families packed the lobby of VA Puget Sound in Seattle on Tuesday for the department’s local commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

Pritz Navaratnasingam, the Seattle VA’s regional director, says recognition of millions of Vietnam vets is long overdue.

"They served with honor and unfortunately we did not honor them in the same way,” Navaratnasingam said. “In conversations that I’ve had with veterans and families of those who've served, it’s very clear the wounds are deep and emotional.”

The veterans received a 50th anniversary lapel pin during a pinning ceremony.

Navaratnasingam reminded the crowd that the commemoration must be an ongoing commitment.

Commemorative events of Vietnam War are taking place nationwide to recognize all who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces from Nov. 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, regardless of duty location.
