Police officer wounded in Mount Vernon

A police officer and another person were shot Thursday night in Mount Vernon, the Washington State Patrol said.

A suspect was taken into custody early Friday, the Washington State Patrol said in a tweet.

Patrol Sgt. Keith Leary described the wounded officer as "conscious and alert" after the shooting. The officer, who was identified as a 30-year veteran, was flown to Harborview Medical Center. He was reported to be in critical condition after surgery.

In a briefing late Thursday, Leary told reporters that officers responded to a call about a shooting.

Gunfire erupted as officers approached a residence near LaVenture Road and Fir Street and the officer was hit.

Leary said more gunshots were fired at police vehicles on the scene.

The condition of the other wounded person and how he was shot were unclear.

On Thursday night, Leary said the suspect was believed to have taken hostages. Later news reports indicated that there may have been no hostages.
