Poet Kate Lebo's newest collection, "A Commonplace Book of Pie," opens with an epigraph from Carl Sagan: "If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe."

This is no problem for Lebo, who is a master of invention as well as pie.

Her slice-sized poems offer a kind of alternate horoscope, where your choice of pie reveals your true personality (at least in the moment of craving).

Her work has appeared in Best New Poets, Gastronomica and Poetry Northwest. Lebo teaches pie making at Pie School and creative writing at Richard Hugo House.

Her reading was recorded in the KUOW Studios on Dec. 6.
