JBLM soldier first female to re-enlist in newly opened jobs

A soldier from Joint Base Lewis-McChord will become the first woman in the Army to reenlist as a cavalry scout.

Army cavalry scouts work in tanks and are the eyes and ears of the commander during battle. It’s a position that’s only recently been opened to women.

Sgt. Kayci Landes has been in the Army for about five years. Until now, Landes was repairing helicopters.

But when it came time to re-enlist she opted to take advantage of the Army's newly opened jobs for enlisted women. A recent policy allows qualified women the opportunity to apply to 14 previously closed combat specialties, including infantry and tank crew.

Landes has three children and is married to a soldier also serving at JBLM. She’ll attend cavalry scout training in October.
