How Much Of Gun Violence Is Suicide?

In President Obama’s State of the Union Address, he called on Congress to pass new gun control legislation. He declared that “in the two months since Newtown, more than a thousand birthdays, graduations and anniversaries have been stolen from our lives by a bullet from a gun."

According to the most recent report on gun deaths by the Center for Disease control, two-thirds of all US gun deaths in 2010 were suicides. 

In both Olympia and Washington, DC, gun control discussions have been about preventing tragedies like the one that happened in Newtown, Conn. But the data shows that many people use guns to harm themselves.

What connection exists between firearms in the home and firearm-related suicides? How can we prevent gun suicides? Ross Reynolds talks to the president and CEO of the Task Force for Global Health, Mark Rosenberg, about gun suicides in the US.
