Derek Wang

Reporter

Derek Wang is a little astonished to realize his public radio career has just about passed the two-decade mark. Currently, he's a reporter and mainly focuses on transportation issues.

Derek has held several different positions at KUOW. For almost three years, he woke up every morning at 3:20 to work as the Local Host for Morning Edition. Following that, he switched to a more normal sleeping pattern and was the Local Host for All Things Considered for almost another three years. Derek has also filled in as KUOW News Director.

He joined the station in 1998, to help with the national launch of the irreverent news-in-review show Rewind with Bill Radke. Before moving to Seattle, Derek worked at NPR member station WNYC in New York City and he started his journalism career at CBS News.

As a transportation reporter, Derek is a proud cyclist, transit rider, carpooler and single occupancy vehicle driver. And as a transplant from New Jersey, he’s a huge fan of the New Jersey Devils and their multiple Stanley Cup titles. Partly because Derek loves the neutral zone trap and a good forecheck. And also because displaced New Jerseyans need to be proud of something "to wash away the shame of being from New Jersey", according to Derek.

Derek has won numerous national and regional journalism awards. He has a bachelor's degree in film from New York University and a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. He and his wife, Gina, live in Seattle.

Drivers who decide to pay tolls on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge with cash or credit card must use the cash-only lanes and stop at the toll plaza.
