Caryn Mathes is president and general manager of KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio. Caryn came to KUOW from public radio station WAMU FM, licensed to American University in Washington, D.C.
During her tenure, WAMU became one of the nation’s top performing public news and information stations by strengthening its position as a national and international provider of news and culture, offering nationally syndicated programs, including The Diane Rehm Show, as well as comprehensive local and regional news coverage.
Prior to her appointment at WAMU, Caryn served as general manager of WDET FM in Detroit for 21 years and news director for two. Caryn has held various positions during her media career – weeknight co-anchor at CBS affiliate WTHI TV Channel 10 in Terre Haute, Indiana, and commercial radio reporter/anchor positions at WCKY AM in Cincinnati and Detroit’s WJR AM before moving to noncommercial radio in 1982.
She is a member director on the NPR board and serves on the University Station Alliance board. Caryn holds a B.A. in journalism from Indiana State University.
